Jaehaerys Targaryen

Jaehaerys Targaryen: The Wise and the Conciliator

The Fourth Targaryen King

Jaehaerys I Targaryen, known as the Conciliator the Wise or the Old King, was the fourth monarch of the Targaryen dynasty to rule the Iron Throne. His long and prosperous reign marked a period of peace and prosperity for Westeros.

What Happens to Jaehaerys Targaryen? Explaining Blood and Cheese

In the Season Two premiere episode of "House of the Dragon," which picks up shortly after Aemond's death, we learn of the tragic fate of Jaehaerys Targaryen. In the episode, the character of Blood and Cheese kills Jaehaerys, a young boy and the son of King Aegon II. This event, known as "Blood and Cheese," is a pivotal moment in the Dance of the Dragons, the civil war that tore the Targaryen family apart.

In George R.R. Martin's novel "Fire & Blood," on which "House of the Dragon" is based, Jaehaerys is not killed by Blood and Cheese. Instead, he is mentioned as having died at Dragonstone, possibly by suicide, at the age of 20. However, the showrunners of "House of the Dragon" decided to alter this plot point for dramatic effect.

The assassination of Jaehaerys in "House of the Dragon" serves to escalate the conflict between the Greens and the Blacks, the two factions vying for the Iron Throne. It also foreshadows the tragic events that will befall the Targaryen family in the years to come.
