Birth and Family Background

Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California, on October 20, 1964. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a Tamil Indian biologist renowned for her work on molecular biology.

Education and Early Career

Harris attended Howard University, where she became involved in student activism and earned a law degree in 1989. She went on to serve as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's office and later became the District Attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.

Political Ascendancy

Harris was elected as Attorney General of California in 2011, becoming the first woman and the first African American to hold that position. In 2016, she was elected to the U.S. Senate, representing California.

Presidential Campaign and Vice Presidency

Harris launched her presidential campaign in 2019 but withdrew during the primaries. In 2020, she was selected by President-elect Joe Biden as his running mate, becoming the first woman of color on a major party's presidential ticket. In January 2021, she was sworn in as the 49th Vice President of the United States.
